Week 2 Forum / Border Policing
If the US border was suddenly more secure it would most certainly cut down on the amount of
illegals that come into the country, would cut off most lines of import, would take away tons of money from
tourism, and would cut many jobs of Americans. People would no longer be able to come to the US in
search of higher education and we would lose a great deal of profit from this also. This would most
certainly have a negative impact on our country because we would have to rely on ourselves for things
that we had imported which would cause most of the population to go into survival mode. Many people
would be stuck without the knowledge to obtain most of the things they use on a daily basis and would
also trigger a halt with most online purchase and transactions. People would be forced to move away
from the internet and back in to the real world. Many people who work in these fields would be put out of
work because import and export with other countries is a daily part of our lives.
The main role of the DoD is to protect the United States borders from illegal intruders, terrorists,
and other unwanted persons. Keeping out terrorists, illegal weapons, and illegal drug trafficking is a
constant duty for them. They also enforce import laws to attempt any illegal items from coming into the
United States. Like many county and city officers are allowed to go one or two miles into another
jurisdiction, the DoD has a certain range of area they must cover to make sure the US is safe at all times.
It is not just a couple of miles thought. The DoD’s “mission is to detect and prevent the illegal entry of
aliens across the nearly 7,000 miles of Mexican and Canadian international borders and 2,000 miles of
coastal borders surrounding Florida and Puerto Rico” (Mason. 2013). This can be a very time consuming
job and causes things to slip through border patrol. The DoD is not made up of military, but rather daily
officers that are backed by the Armed Forces.
