Gender and Gender Roles
Undeniably, culture influences the constructions of gender and gender roles. Gender
roles also change across cultures because customs and religious beliefs dictate how people
perceive gender and define gender roles. Customs and cultural values, thereby serve as
instruments for controlling gender balance. This study illustrates and explains how gender is
understood in both Islamic and Western cultures.
Mainstream media depicts significantly high gender inequalities in Islamic culture.
Although Qur'an emphasizes equality between men and women, problematic interpretation
culminates in the unfair treatment of women. Various studies utter that women in Muslim
societies encounter gender-based inequalities linked to patriarchal gender system (Offenhauer
& Buchalter, 2005). Dominant values and practices, such as early marriage, veiling, female
genital mutilation, sex segregation, and restrictive codes of women behavior, help explain the
prevalence of oppressive actions against women in Islamic society (Offenhauer & Buchalter,
2005). Besides, oppression related to practices, such as FGM and early marriage, should be
seen as a drain to the health of women in this culture.
In western culture, women enjoy more privileges than in Islamic societies. Western
societies are increasingly fighting the issue of gender inequality, with non-traditional methods
of dividing family work between partners gaining popularity (Horowitz et al., 2017). To some
degree, women still perform duties considered less significant. For example, gender
inequality discourse dominates workplace contexts, with multiple studies highlighting that
men mostly occupy leadership positions. Unlike in Islamic societies, gender equality
concerning education is apparent in western cultures. Both genders have arguably equal
opportunities as it pertains to accessing healthcare services.
Gender and gender roles in the Islamic and Western worlds are mainly a product of
