In all aspect of life either at the community or an organization level, people have

often needed someone to direct them on what to do and when to do something. People

who lead others are called leaders and have the ability to influence or direct others to

perform a given task. The act of leading is referred to as leadership. For instance, in an

organization like an international airport, effective leadership is required to achieve its

goals. This entails making the difficult and sound decisions, setting realistic and

achievable goals and stating clear vision to direct the organization and what the

subordinate staff needs to achieve. To achieve the set visions and goals a leader needs

to employ different leadership types and styles depending on the type of workers or the

prevailing conditions. It is important to note that leadership is different from

management and supervision.

Effective leadership is paramount for the achievement of the set organizational

goals and in the stipulated time. To achieve this, leaders must have a clear

understanding of the principles of leadership which help to improve transparency and

innovation in an organization. First, the leader needs to be able to delegate duties.

Good leaders gain their skills through practice which require some amount of autonomy.

Leaders should distribute power in an organization either downwards or laterally to their

subordinates (Harvey, 2016, p.43). This principle is important because it empowers the

other employees to make decisions even when they are not directly supervised. It also

improves the collective adaptability and intelligence of the members of the organization

by collecting wisdom from these people who may are outside the traditional decision-

making hierarchy. Also, the delegation of duties gives the leader a chance to take risks

with the subordinate staff which may also increase their commitment to the
