Is narcissism increasing in the United States?
Narcissism is at a continuum from healthy to pathological. The character of
Narcissism is a part of normal human functioning. In normal operation, it represents healthy
self-love as well as confidence based on achievement, the ability to overcome setbacks, and
the support needed from social context. However, Narcissism can become an issue when a
person becomes preoccupied with self, seeking excessive admiration and approval from
others. In this case, they show disregard for others' sensitivity. In the United States, the
report released by the diagnostic Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders shows that the
prevalence of Narcissism personality disorder is 6% of the general population higher than the
estimated antisocial disorder. With the increasing technology and social media, narcissism
culture has been noted to rise in the United States.
Narcissism has been rising since the rise of the self-esteem movement. As self-esteem
as perceived as the key to success in life, parents and educators gave their children support by
telling them how unique and special they are to raise confidence. As a result, there is a high
rise in individualism as the social norms decline in the modernization of society. The
declining family and community are unable to provide the same support and connect
individuals as before. As the fabric of society diminishes, there is a lack of meaningful
connection. Modernization of the current culture seems to prize fame, celebrity, and wealth
above all else. Additionally, the ongoing increase in use in social media sites such as
Facebook and Instagram has been linked with the increasing narcissism behaviors among the
users.

Over the past decades, the narcissistic personality trait has been noted to rise in the
United States. Besides, the issues of Narcissism have been linked to other problems such as
the political and economic crises. Tracking the rise of Narcissism can be done following the
research conducted by Jean Twenge in the publication The Narcissism Epidemic, which
shows the gradual but shifting seismically in the US culture norm towards self-admiration
(Twenge et al. 921). Narcissism is described to hurt the reciprocity that binds families and the
community as it encourages divisive and antisocial, short term behavior over the long term,
collective decision making in the society.
Further research conducted on Narcissism shows two-third of college students
answered questions in a narcissistic direction in 2009 in comparison to 1982. The study was
conducted using the Narcissism Personality Inventory (NPI) test. In these studies, the results
showed that in 2014, 59% of American college freshmen rated themselves above average in
intellectual self-confidence compared to the 39% with was conducted in 1966 (Dutta et al.
