Should there be stricter gun laws?
Gun laws have been subject to discussion in the United States over a long time now,
while some of the people and political affiliates are for stricter gun laws while others are
opposed to the idea. Across the globe, the United States is among the leading countries with
the highest gun violence cases. Moreover, according to a survey carried out in 2013, a third
of Americans in the U.S. own guns. The U.S. is the top country in the world, with most of its
citizens having guns. This survey also revealed that the number of firearms is 2.25 times
greater than the gun owners. The laws that have been stipulated before are non-restrictive, as
gun ownership is protected under the bill of rights. The gun culture has been a primary factor
that is hindering more restrictive gun laws. However, the rising cases of gun violence and
deaths are alarming and call for stricter gun laws to be implemented.
One of the significant pressing issues in global development is human security. The
creed to American democracy is the fundamental human right to life, liberty as well as a
pursuit of happiness. Nevertheless, 96 American citizens are killed by gun-related violence
each day (Stroebe, Wolfgang, 21). To prioritize its creed and provide its citizen's security can
be achieved through governments enacting stricter gun laws. In other developed countries,
restrictive gun control laws have shown effectiveness in reducing gun violence. Such laws
can be applied in the USA and be effective in promoting the country's democratic creed.
Gun violence in the USA has become one of the highest national security threats. This
calls for action to neutralize this threat that has claimed many lives caused several injuries
and mental health issues to the surviving victims of such attacks. Making of strict gun laws
will enhance reduced gun violence and deaths. According to the statistics conducted since
1999 to 2016, the total gun deaths were 572,537. Among these deaths, 336,579 were suicides,

213,175 were homicides, while 11,428 deaths were unintentional cases (Lewis, Scott, 4).
Guns are the leading cause of homicides in the USA. In 2017out of all the homicides
killings, the deaths by guns were at 73%. This shows the use of firearms by civilians has a
significant impact on the security of the people.
The less restrictive laws on guns have resulted in increased deaths, and therefore more
firm laws should be applied. According to the study conducted by the American Journal of
Public Health, found out that the legal purchase of handguns was associated with a lasting
increased risk of violent deaths. Additionally, the New England Journal of Medicine study
found out that firearms were the second leading cause of mortality for children at 15%
compared to 32% by motor vehicle crashes (Olufajo et al. 532).
The argument that stricter gun laws do not deter crime is unfounded. The study by
Applied Economics Letters articulated that assault weapon bans did not significantly affect
the murder rate at the state level. It also asserted that states with restrictions to carry
concealed weapons had higher gun-related murders. Also, the increased gun ownership has
doubled in the twentieth century was negatively related to murder rates decrease. It has also
been stated that states with the most significant increases in firearm ownership have
experienced the largest drops in violent crimes. Two third of the gun owners have reported
that the reason for their purchase was to protect themselves. It is also noted that the
possession of firearms by the civilians reduces the cases of crime as the criminals fear the
retaliation of the victims who may possess guns.
However, this has proved quite the contrary when evaluating the gun laws and the
school shooting cases in the U.S. Since the late 20th century, and the U.S. has recorded the
highest number of school shooting globally. By 2018 the School shooting cases have reached
