COUNSELOR ETHICS AND RESPONSIBILITIES 2
Client’s Rights
Most people enter into the counseling profession with a desire to help others in some
form or another. There is also an implied need of helping others to improve their lives by aiding
in dealing with something that is causing issues within their lives. Counselors must strive to help
others while staying within the guidelines of a code of ethics within their given profession’s area
of expertise. And they must abide by the state laws where they practice.
According to the ACA Code of Ethics Preamble (2014),
The fundamental principles of professional ethical behavior are
autonomy, or fostering the right to control the direction of one’s life;
nonmaleficence, or avoiding actions that cause harm;
beneficence, or working for the good of the individual and society by promoting
mental health and well-being;
justice, or treating individuals equitably and fostering fairness and equality;
fidelity, or honoring commitments and keeping promises, including fulfilling
one’s responsibilities of trust in professional relationships.
Autonomy is simply helping the client make their own decisions about their life. While a
counselor is there to facilitate this process, the client, when applicable, should be the one who
ultimately chooses what to do. They must look at what choices they have and how it will affect
their lives and the lives of others who may be involved with them. The counselor must take into
consideration if the client is mentally capable of making competent choices, say when working
with minors. (Forester-Miller & Thomas 1996).
