VIGEE LEBRUN POTRAIT COMPARISON 2
In Vigee Lebrun, Self Portrait, 1782, Vigee is wearing a feathered straw hart. She is in
white, pink, and black attire. The painting catches the viewer’s attention by portraying Vigee as a
beautiful and confident painter. In the painting, she is holding her painting brushes and a palette
in her left hand. The other hand hangs freely in a friendly and welcoming way. In the painting,
the attractive young woman gazes directly at the viewer. He lips are slightly apart as if she is
amused or about to speak. The background seems like a clouded or empty sky. Her clothes
represent wealth and luxury and also bring her out as a skilled painter. She also expresses herself
as a powerful and influential painter (The Art History, n.d).
In the second painting, Vigee is wearing a black outfit with white laces on the hands and
the collar, a white turban, and a wide red ribbon as a belt. She sits in a relaxed pose in front of a
portrait that she is painting. Her position is slightly off-center. Unlike in the first painting, she
seems to be a bit closer to the viewer. She holds her used brushes and a palette on the one hand
and the other hand, she is working on an incomplete piece. She also looks at the viewer directly
with amusement. The viewer can see alertness, vibrancy, and a boldness. The art represents an
extravagant lifestyle of nobility (The MET 150, n.d). The palettes are different in the two
paintings such that in the pre-revolutionary art, the palette is fresh and shiny, but in the second
painting, the palette is held in a way that shows work in progress.
