Week 1 Day 5 checkpoint-Twentieth-century Penitentiary System
One significant change that happened to the prison industry in the twentieth century
includes the move from releasing a convict on the basis of the neck verse. The neck verse
consisted of the inmate citing from memorization a certain passage out of the bible; generally it
was Psalms 51 of the Bible. The condition with the neck verse is that anyone, regardless if they
understood or not, or could read or not, could recite this verse and avoid being imprisoned or
released from prison. This is unfair in that the criminal was not facing any punishment for his/her
crime.
Another significant change that I have found in the prisons is the fact that prisons are no
longer just a penitentiary where they lock one up until time is served, but we are now looking
and utilizing rehabilitation more. Rehabilitation is a good deterrence in having prisons become a
revolving door. Once a prisoner is released they are more equipped to adapt and function in
society.
Being that the neck verse is not a change in the prison system I will go on to add another
significant change in the prison system to be the use of the merit system. Earning good time, as
we call it today, for a certain amount of completed time without any discipline referrals. This
helps to build up confidence in an inmate, just as a reward for a child doing what is expected of
him, he will receive an allowance, this is kind of similar with the merit system however , what is
being given is another extra day closer to being released back into society because they have
earned it. Once an inmate begins to earn credits they try their best, usually, to avoid anything that
will revoke those good days earned.
