Question 2: How has Paris’s history shaped the city? Use some specific events from your
readings.
Paris is known as the city of lights as well as the city of enlightenment and culture. Paris was one
of the very first places to use streetlamps throughout the city, and this is part of the reason why
the city is still known as the city of lights. Further along in the city’s history the leaders of Paris
decided to put lights in all of the great monuments that are around the city to encourage tourism
and commerce within the city past daylight. When Napoleon was in charge of Paris after the
French Revolution, he decided that Paris needed more great monuments. This was because he
thought that the city needed to be revitalized and according to Napoleon, new monuments would
be a good way to raise moral and quell the unrest among the citizens of Paris due to the recent
tragedies of the Revolution. This history and the monuments that this decision made are still a
huge part of Parisian culture today. Paris today is also shaped by what was written, drawn,
painted, and said about it throughout history. There is a deep affection for the city of Paris that is
worldwide and even prevalent in people who have never been to Paris or even France as well as
in places that have no connections or ties to Paris because of all of the media about the city.
Everyone feels as though they have been to the city of lights and this sentiment has existed for
decades. This affection that creates this mythical image of Paris has shaped the true identity of
the city because many people have memories and dreams of the city before or without ever being
there and that is a huge part of what the city represents today. Another historical thing that has
shaped the city of Paris today is all of the war time and revolutions and religious detachments.
These major historical events left behind monuments and sentiments and stories that have helped
to shape the city of Paris today because of all of the historical importance that those occurrences
have left behind.
