Seven Ages of Paris by Allistair Horne
This article talks about the control and the bombardment and attack from the Prussians, it also
discusses the treaty signed at Versailles as well as the Commune. The article goes into lots of
detail of the suffering that the people of Paris went through during the time when the Prussians
were in Paris. One thing that is detailed quite gruesomely in this article is what the Parisians had
to do for food during the siege when food was super scarce. The author also takes time to discuss
the feelings that the Parisians had on the treaty of Versailles and the fact that the new control
center for the powers of France would be Versailles instead of Paris like it always had been.
Another thing that this article talks about is what happened during the Commune, such as what it
was, what happened, and how many people were killed. I thought this article was very interesting
and I especially found the part about what the Parisians had to eat for food during the siege was
thought provoking. I was surprised at all of the things that they resorted to eating, such as horses
first but then dogs and cats and then eventually rats as well as zoo animals such as kangaroos. I
always pictured Paris to be one of the cuisine capitals of the world so to hear that during their
history they were eating rats and zoo animals was interesting to learn about, especially because
the article talked about how some of these animals such as kangaroos would have been
considered a somewhat delicacy and have been served in restaurants. I would have thought that
with the severe food shortage that made people resort to eating such things as rats and their
domesticated pets would have caused restaurants and other food places to close just because of
the shortage. I think this article is very relevant to our course, one because it talks about some of
the more violent history of Paris, but it also gives insight into what life was like for Paris when
the city was being attacked.
