Out of all of the things I read for these units, “Squares” by Emile Zola was my favorite.
“Squares” tells about the city’s gardens and green spaces and I liked this one because it talked
about the different kinds of green spaces that the city has and what they look like and how they
feel. The author talks about how Paris is creating green spaces in the residential areas for people
to be in and use. The story describes what was popular to do in Paris in the realm of green spaces
and plants, such as planting bushes outside of churches. I also really like how this story describes
a little of the history of Paris and also touches on a few of the gardens that aren’t as nice, instead
of only focusing on the super popular, well-kept gardens, as well as talking about other not so
perfect parts of Paris such as how the streets are worn and dirty from constant use and traffic. I
also think that this story is hopeful for a greener future in Paris because the author says he hopes
that in the future Paris will have enough green space for every person in the city. The squares, or
gardens, that are described in this story are all very diverse, with some of them being just
pavement with a few trees, while some others are described as being full on gardens with grass
and elaborate plants and planning, so it is not so farfetched that eventually Paris could have a
little bit of green space for every Parisian. I think that this concept of green spaces for everyone
in the city is an important concept in the culture that Paris has, so it was interesting to be able to
read about that more. I love seeing public gardens and spaces like that when I visit a new city,
and after reading this I would love to be able to explore all the different squares and green spaces
that Paris has to offer. I'm also very curious as to how far the city of Paris has gotten on this
dream that the main character of this short story has since this story was written.
