PATIENT INTAKE FORM AND NURSING RESOURCE HANDOUT 2
Patient Intake Form and Nursing Handout
Part A: Nursing Resource Handout
1. Principles in professional nursing practice
Examples of holistic philosophical, theoretical, and ethical principles in professional
nursing practice include the principle of fidelity, the principle of accountability, the
principle of autonomy, the principle of veracity, the principle of beneficence, the
principle of nonmaleficence and the principle of justice. The principle of justice is all
about fairness and requires that nurses be fair when delivering care to different patient
groups. The principle of beneficence is about doing good and right to patients (Burke,
2020). It requires nurses to perform the right clinical practices that benefit patients. The
principle of nonmaleficence is about doing no damage or harm, that is either intentional
or unintentional, as specified in the past Hippocratic Oath.
The principle of accountability is all about being responsible for someone’s actions or
doings. It requires nurses to be accountable for all their nursing practices and care they
undertake. The principle of fidelity focuses on keeping someone’s promises. It requires
that nurses be faithful and honest to their nursing responsibilities and promises to patients
by offering high-quality and safe clinical care (Burke, 2020). The principle of veracity is
about exercising complete truth to patients. It requires that nurses not to suppress the
truth from patients even if the truth can result in patient distress (Burke, 2020). The
autonomy principle requires the nurse to accept a client, such as patients, as an
exceptional individual who has the right to give opinions, beliefs, values, and
perspectives.
