According to the Institute of Organization Development (2015), some of the critical
competencies that are needed by an OD practitioner include
1. The ability to measure positive change. This competency enables an OD Practitioner to
effectively track the change process as a way of evaluating the achievement of initially
set objectives. This will benefit both the practitioner and the client because there will be
tangible evidence to show the progress that the entity has made. Hence strengthening the
trust that exists between all the stakeholders.
2. Development of self-mastery. This is one of the vital competencies because it helps the
OD practitioner prevent one’s biases, opinions, and views from interfering with one’s
capacity to make rational decisions. In this case, both the client and the practitioner will
benefit because all the work that will be done by the OD practitioner will be objective ad
it will focus on the entity’s needs and not those of the practitioner.
3. The capacity to comprehend and apply research methods. Research methods will help
certify that all the decisions made are valid, efficient, and objective. The use of data helps
ensure that sufficient evidence supports all the changes that plan to be implemented (Britt
& Jex, 55). The client and the practitioner will benefit from this competency because all
the decisions made will be backed up by reproducible scientific data. Hence, raising the
success rate of the interventions.
4. Power to manage diversity. The ability to manage diversity is a competency that will
ensure that the OD practitioner is considerate of the cultural diversity that exists in the
organization and use it to his or her advantage. The practitioner and the client will benefit
from this because less conflict will arise from cultural issues. Hence, saving time and
