SINGLE SYSTEM DESIGN 2
Under the single-subject design, the study collects and analyses data from only one
person/subject. Here, data is collected from the subject twice; before and after the
implementation of the intervention. The outcome of Chris’s study with her client George
(Plummer, Makris & Brocksen, 2014b) would lead me to adopt the model of case management
with solution-focused and task-centered approaches. In my view, the single-subject design is
more comprehensive as it lays its focus on a single subject whose assessment has to be
thoroughly done. This increases the reliability and accuracy of the results obtained.
In the case of Chris and George, it has been noted that the initial areas that required
assistance are personal care, long term planning, and the decreased mobility (Plummer, Makris &
Brocksen, 2014b). As such, clinical rating scales were used which led to most of George’s needs
being identified and addressed. This study design also facilitates understanding the impact or
change that is taking place once a specific intervention is implemented. This goes to show the
extent to which the single-subject design is not only thorough but also straight to the point.
A weakness that the single-subject design has is that the results obtained cannot be
generalized to the entire population due to having used only one subject. The study’s external
validity is also in question because it is difficult to apply the results of this study to any other
setting other than the one where the study was performed (Dudley, 2014). For these reasons, for
Chris and her colleagues to submit the study to the evidence-based practice registry, these two
weaknesses must be addressed. This can be achieved by selecting the single subject randomly
among subjects who have the same problem that most patients have to increase its external
validity. Also, the study can pass as an evidence-based one for the specific population or agency
it was conducted as opposed to having it generalized to the entire population. This will solve the
generalizability problem to limit the results of the study to the specific agency and population.
