CHEMISTRY, BIOMOLECULES AND CELLS 2
Briefly define the following terms
Matter: Matter is anything that occupies space and has mass
Element: An element is a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances through
ordinary chemical means.
Compound: This is a substance that is made up of a definite ratio of two or more elements
chemically combined together.
Atom: An atom is the smallest unit of matter that can retain the chemical characteristics of its
element.
Proton: A proton is a subatomic particle found within the nucleus with a single positive
electrical charge which is equal but opposite to the charge of an electron
Electron: An electron is a subatomic particle, found around the nucleus, with a single negative
electrical charge
Neutron: A neutron is a subatomic particle found within the nucleus with no electrical charge
Nucleus: This is the center of an atom that is made up of the protons and the neutrons tightly
packed together.
Atomic number: The atomic number is analogous to the number of protons in an atom which is
unique for every element.
Mass number: The mass number is the sum of the number of protons and the number of
neutrons of an atom.
Atomic mass: Atomic mass or sometimes, the atomic weight, is the average of the mass of
atoms of an element such that the relative abundance of an isotope is multiplied by the mass of
that particular isotope
