SELECTING ROLES FOR WINDOWS 2016 SERVER

It is important not to install all the server roles so that you are prepared for any
contingency. Installing all the server roles means that you are providing all rights of the server
administrator. Core server roles offer more stable and secure sever environment. The inclusion of
all server roles creates vulnerability associated with GUI that need high hardware specifications.
For example, a user logged on a local machine with an account without administrator privileges
can search target server in the Servers tile and provide an account that has administrator
privileges. This means the installation of all roles provides minimum security control.
However, the installation of all roles weakens the security of the server since it increases
the attack surface. All server role installations mean that many applications are running on the
server which increases the attack surface. It also increases management since many applications
and services are running on the server (Panek, 2015).
In Windows Server, the PowerShell cmdlets enable the installation of roles and features
to both local and remote servers. It allows the installation of multiple roles and features on a
remote server within a single PowerShell session. The tool allows the administrator to perform
actions in bulk and therefore save time when compared to performing the same group of actions
utilizing GUI tools.
