Crime Scene Investigations
In a crime scene, the criminals' marks are left on the surface they came into contact with.
The patterns are known as impression evidence and can be in footprints, tire marks, and assault
tools. The implication evidence is usually used in a court of law during the trial and judgment of
suspects. In this paper, the focus is placed on the patterns left by footwear in the crime scene.
These patterns are usually in two to three-dimensional images of their original form. The marks
left by footwear are generally associated with their brand, size, and fashion; the investigators use
it to identify the retailers, thus establishing their owners and directly linking them to the crime
scene. The crime scenes where impression evidence is more critical are; assault, robbery, rape,
homicide, and hit and run, among other crimes where footprints are left (David, 2019).
Value of footprint or footwear evidence
Footwear pattern evidence is essential to the investigation officers since it provides
valuable data. Petraco & Petraco (2016) documents the importance of footwear evidence as
follows. The information obtained from footwear evidence includes, first, the exact location
where the crime occurred; for instance, bloody footprints will indicate the precise point of
murder by examining the amount of blood left by the prints, from the highest to the lowest.
Second, the direction where a suspect moved to before, during, and after the crime. For instance,
in a store robbery, the footprints will indicate the suspect's movement in the aisles, counter, and
out of the store. Third, the number of suspects involved in the crime. The diversity in structure,
size, and footwear print will give the number of suspects at the crime scene during the offense.
Fourth, establish if the suspect used any transport, or if he/she was on foot. If there are marks of
tires in addition to the footprints, then the investigators will establish the type of transport that
the suspect used, adding upon the evidence. Fifth, the timeline of the occurrence of a crime. For
