The article, “A gendered emotional display perspective on workplace touch and
perceived supervisor support, examines if gender differences affect subordinates’ interpretation
of physical touch (Fuller et al., 2017). A lesson learned from the text is that although physical
touch allows people to convey emotions and feelings, it may not be advisable for managers to
utilize physical touch in the office. The article explains that the effect of physical touch to
convey positive messages may not be successful, for there is a disconnection between empirical
evidence and these blanket statements. The authors write that there is little empirical evidence
and research on workplace interpersonal touch due to various reasons. One of these reasons is
that it is difficult to study. Here, we understood that research on the topic is complex due to its
observational nature. Additionally, non-intimate parties are less likely to participate in touchy
habits. Lastly, such a study presents a problem to researchers due to its gendered nature, which
means that subordinates view physical touch differently depending on the managers’ gender. For
a better understanding of this, the article expounds on these by dividing the literature review into
three sections (Fuller et al., 2017). These are workplace physical touch, emotional expression,
and the gendered notion of touch.
In the literature review section, we grasped that although workplace physical touch may
lead to positive relationships and work environment, various factors hinder its success. The
article explains that these hindrances are its association with harassment, companies’ attempts to
form conducive work plans, and the impact of culture on perception. Here, a lesson learned is
that culture defines the accepted level and type of touch for every individual, which means that
people from different backgrounds within an organization may interpret touch differently.
