ROLE OF WOMEN IN WORLD WAR II 2
While it is assumed that World War II was the first time large numbers of American
women worked outside their homes, approximately a quarter of women worked outside their
homes in 1940 (before WWII). The shift was in the type of work women performed; before the
war, women performed jobs that were thought of as traditionally female such as typing or
sewing, and were forced to stop working immediately after they had children or were married
(Khan Academy, 2018). Perhaps my great grandmother was one of these women who had found
employment but been forced to leave her work after she got married to perform her wifely duties.
The stories I have heard about her show that she was very strong and driven, so I believe that she
would have done so because of societal pressure rather than as a personal choice.
When World War II led to many men leaving their factory jobs, causing the government
to create the propaganda campaign centered on Rosie the Riveter (The Library of Congress, 2017
October 31) to increase the number of women working in traditionally male-oriented jobs like
defense or factory jobs, she would have been excited to start working. Like Rosie, my great
grandmother, as well as the other women, would have been strong and able to perform factory
work. If she already had children, she would have had to handle a child while working a factory
job. She may have been lucky and been able to take her child to one of the seven childcare
facility centers Eleanor Roosevelt advocated for, which served a total of 105,000 children. She
would have had to deal with the cultural resistance that women faced for doing “men’s work”
(Owens, 2017). I believe she would have been proud of her part in fighting the war and her
contribution to keeping the country running while other American men and women fought.
Perhaps she would have been one of the 350,000 American women who joined the military
(Khan Academy, 2018). She may have worked as a nurse, truck driver, repaired airplanes, or
done clerical work.
