POETRY ANALYSIS 2
Poem 1: The Preludes by T. S. Eliot
Literary Analysis
1. Summarize: Describe the poem’s setting, citing specific lines or phrases that allow
you to envision the place Eliot describes.
The poem is set in an anonymous modern city during different times of the day. In line 13 the
author mentions “the lighting of the lamps” which is an indication of evening or night time.
2. Interpret: A prelude is a short musical piece based on a recurrent theme. Why do you
think Eliot titled this poem “Preludes”? Does knowing the meaning of this word give
you any new insights into the poem? Explain.
Indeed, knowing the title provides an idea on the subject topic of the poem. Each part has a
beginning of the day. For instance, the second and third phases capture, “the morning comes
to consciousness” and “you tossed the blanket from the bed” which are both indications of a
start of the day.
Poem 2: The Hollow Men by T. S. Eliot
1. Summarize: Describe the hollow men. What are their key traits, and what is their
existence like?
The author captures the hollow men as following the other worldly journey of the dead. Their
traits include humility and an acknowledgement of the guilt that they carry which is typical of
their lost souls.
2. Analyze Imagery: What images are repeated in this poem? What ideas do these
images convey? Cite evidence to support your answer.
