GLOBAL ETHNIC CONFLICTS 2
South Sudan Ethnic Conflict
Introduction
For an extended period, South Sudan has been the center of ethnic-based conflicts. The
country has more than 60 tribes, but two ethnic groups constitute a large population percentage.
The two largest ethnic groups are the Dinka and the Nuer. The ethnic conflict majorly features
the two largest and influential identity groups fighting against each other. These two groups had
previously engaged in fights over grazing land and water for their cattle, with such clashes taking
place in a local context, causing no massive amounts of fatalities (Manyok, 2017). However,
since 2013, the situation has become worse as the conflict between the Dinka and Nuer
communities has increased due to power struggles between their leaders.
Ethnic Groups Involved in the Conflict Including Cultural Similarities

president, comes from the Nuer community. Machar's dismal from his position in the

cattle’s rustling, which is a tradition of pastoralists in the region (Manyok, 2017). Also, the two
communities have a standard way of worship. The religions of the two groups have a similar
belief that the high God created them. The Nuers refer to their God as Kwoth while the Dinka
