LAB WORK 1: CELL TRANSPORT I. DIFFUSION INTRODUCTION Have you ever wondered how the sweet smell of perfume sprayed from across the room suddenly reaches you? Or the delicious smell of the food that your mother is cooking in the kitchen reaches you in your bedroom? Diffusion is the movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration. This is how the particles move until there are equal concentrations everywhere. Every cell in your body allows the entrance and exit of materials made possible by the cell membrane. In this activity, you will observe the process of diffusion and discover the functions of the cell membrane. OBJECTIVES 1. Demonstrate the process of diffusion in the liquid state; and 2. Explain the process of diffusion. MATERIALS ● 1 glass of tap water ● Few drops of liquid food coloring OR 1 teaspoon of soy sauce ● Perfume spray PROCEDURES A. Food coloring Experiment 1. Fill up the glass with tap water 2. Slowly drop some liquid food coloring or soy sauce into the glass of water. DO NOT STIR. 3. Observe the movement of the drops of liquid food coloring / soy sauce in the water. 4. Leave the solution for about 3-5 minutes and then observe again. B. Perfume Experiment 1. Stand in one corner of a room. 2. Pump 3-5 sprays of perfume. 3. Go to the opposite side or corner of the room and observe what will happen with the scent of the perfume. OBSERVATIONS 1.
