USE OF GMOs IN FOOD PRODUCTION 2
Use of GMOs in food production.
There has been a rising concern about the production and use of GMOs by different
parties worldwide. The GMOs are organisms whose genome has been altered to serve an
intended particular purpose. There are several ethical questions concerning both the
environment and health that arise during the use of food produced through GMOs technology
(Hanlon & Sewalt, 2020). This increase in GMOs food as brought up the question of ethical
eating. Ethics can be defined as the laid down standards in determining what is right and what
is wrong in subscribing to ones’ beliefs and values. The emerging of this technology has
played a critical role in supplementing insufficient traditional food production. The change in
climatic conditions has made traditional food production unreliable as they are significantly
affected by the constant change of weather (Naylor, 2017).
From a health perspective, the question has been; Are GM foods safe and healthy for
human consumption? The answer to this can be well derived from the ethical principles that
are upheld and govern the food professionals. One ethical theory to which food professionals
subscribe is respect for autonomy (Zhu et al., 2020). According to this theory, the public has
a right to know what they are buying. This will allow one to make an informed decision while
purchasing the food. Making it autonomous to people means the product has been well
assessed and passed the international risk standards, which means that it will have no health
risks to the public (Karunasagar, 2016).
In summary, the risks of using GMOs in food production can be outweighed by the
benefits this technology has come with. If the ethical code can be observed from the initial
production stages to food labeling standards, then the technology should be embraced and
recognized.
