PSY2204:RESEARCH METHODS IN PSYCHOLOGY 2
#2.Dr. White conducts research on college students at Iowa State University, where more
than 75 percent of students are White. Further, the three largest ethnic minority groups in the
United States (Latinos, Blacks, and Asians) collectively make up just under 10 percent of
Iowa State students. Thinking about the OOPS! heuristic, what challenges might this pose for
the external validity of Dr. Whites research? What, if anything, can she do about it
While any credible research must be representative of all the groups, the research of Dr.White
will pose very minimal external validity challenges, if any. This is because the statewide
population of Iowa State comprises of 90.28% white,3.51% blacks, and 2.40% Asian. To avoid
external validity issues touching on replication and reporting, Dr. Whites sampling population
must be representative of the racial demographics in the university since it is representative of
the realities in the state. This is because external validity should be avoided since it is the extent
to which research studies generalize across races or groups of people due to settings and periods.
The only potential challenge is that the study might be rendered irrelevant in the future if the
racial dynamics of the state drastically change.
#4. A researcher who knew the director of a natural birthing facility interviewed 100 women
who were planning to give birth at the center. Specifically, the researcher interviewed the
mothers-to-be during the six-month check-ups at the birthing center. She asked the mothers-
to-be if they planned to breastfeed their infants until the infants were at least one year of age.
Imagine that exactly 90 percent of the 100 mothers-to-be who were interviewed answered that
they planned to do so. Using the OOPS! heuristic as a guide, explain why the researcher
cannot safely conclude that 90 percent of U.S. mothers today do, in fact, breastfeed their
infants for the first year of life.
It is quite evident that the researcher’s sampling of 100 women from one birthing facility lacks
in satisfying both external and internal validity thresholds. This is because the 100 women are
not representative of all birthing mothers in the united states since they come from one locality
and the chances are they are likely to even subscribe to a specific ethnic group yet the united
states is a very diverse country. Again, most women in the united states prefer caesarian as
opposed to natural birth and this study is therefore culpable of bias towards mothers who
undergo caesarian birth. Additionally, the researcher also interviewed women who were already
six months pregnant and there is a very high probability that a considerable number of them
could change their minds and fail to breastfeed their children as earlier promised. The research
could therefore be culpable of what some social scientists refer to as judgment heuristics since it
could underlie sound judgment. It lacks representativeness and seems to have been based on the
availability of the women in the birthing facility.
