FOOD DIGESTION AND HEALTHY DIET 2
Food Digestion and Healthy Diet
The segments of the alimentary canal involved in food digestion are the mouth,
esophagus, stomach, small intestines, large intestines, and the anus. There are accessory organs
in the small intestine that assist in digestion, which are the liver, gallbladder, and liver.
The best diet for human body development and sustainability is a balanced diet with
foods containing all the nutritional values. The nutritional values the body need are
carbohydrates, vitamins, proteins, lipids, and minerals. Breastfeeding is the best diet for children,
which can take place until the child is two years. Afterward, children and adults should take a
meal containing foods, balanced across food groups. According to Blackstone et al. (2018),
processed foods and drinks should be restricted in the daily diet. The daily meal should contain
nuts, a variety of vegetables and fruits, whole grains, legumes, and clean water. A person should
also moderate the among of eggs, fish, poultry, red meat, and dairy in the diet. The presence of
whole grain is important in providing roughage, which is essential for digestive health.
We cannot draw a straight line on one specific diet, but rather it is advisable to have a
combined diet solution. Different foods have different rates of digestion in the body and
nutritional value. Similarly, different foods have varying respiratory quotient hence different
amounts of energy released in the body for physiological body processes. Different foods should
be taken at different times. For instance, a sportsperson should not take a similar diet as the
menial worker in the mining industry. According to Blackstone et al. (2018), the best-combined
diet solution is not combining foods high in carbohydrates and protein in the same meal. The
authors explain that carbohydrates require an alkaline medium to digest it, and proteins require
an acidic medium. Combining both food types in the same meal may result in inefficiency in
obtaining all the essential nutrients from the meal.
