CARING FOR OTHERS AND SELF 2
Caring for Others and Self
The article, Feeling Joy for Others by Ron Passfield, teaches how individuals should not
let envy and jealousy prevent them from sharing in the happiness, joys, and good fortunes of
others (Passfield, 2018). Such tendencies get realized by practicing mindful meditation centered
on learning how to relate to the feelings of delight and accomplishment of others. Doing so lifts
the notion of self-absorption and self-centeredness and creates sympathetic joy, warming our
hearts in the process.
One takeaway I learned is that to experience joy with others, one needs to be grounded.
What this means is that my mental and emotional state should be abiding enough not to get
swayed by the happenings of the day or be prone to any form of disorientation easily. As a result,
I can make a deliberate decision to experience empathetic joy for others without getting
overwhelmed by any jealousy or hate. I would communicate with friends and family on the
importance of caring for others by sharing podcasts and articles that convey concern and making
mindful conversations on the character that one should develop.
Jon Kabat Zinn repeatedly defines mindfulness as the presence of compassion (Kabat-
Zinn, 2020). It is the awareness of the state one is in and their environment without having a
biased opinion. To him, mindfulness is heartfulness. I do agree with him that it is tough to
practice heedfulness and compassion because of the many distractions all around us. We are
humans who tend to judge every situation at hand. I also conquer with his analysis of how much
technology has made it harder to be mindful since we are easily attracted to our gadgets.
However, I do not believe that chariness should get changed and tailored to suit the era we are in
now. Doing so changes the very foundation and authenticity of mindfulness. For instance, people
have successfully practiced compassion by borrowing from the traditional systems of meditation.
