HUMAN GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT 2
Human Growth and Development
Part A
Erikson defined middle adulthood as the period of Generativity versus Stagnation in
which people examine their involvement in family, society, job, and community. This is
Erikson's seventh psychosocial stage of development, and it occurs throughout middle adulthood
(40- 65). Individuals at all stages of generativity may seek to provide direction and assistance to
succeeding generations, sometimes through parenting or mentorship roles. They could opt to take
on responsibilities that would benefit others. Furthermore, the generativity stage states that
people will attempt to leave their imprint on the society by providing for others and developing
things that will create a better place (Feldman, 2017). On the other hand, stagnation refers to an
individual's failure to contribute. As a result, these individuals may become isolated from society
or community. Many people who complete the generativity versus Stagnation stage will feel a
sense of accomplishment for their value to society.
Contrary, Erikson's final phase in the human growth is called Ego Integrity Versus
Despair. People at this stage look back on their lives, evaluate them, and come to terms with
them. This stage happens in late adulthood and lasts from 65 to death. During this time, people
may think about their achievements and contributions and the impact they have had on society
and their community and come to terms with facing death. Thus, achieving Ego Integrity was a
success (Feldman, 2017). On the other hand, many adults may look back and feel bad about their
lives since they feel like they haven't done enough work or missed out on chances. As a result,
these people could get angry, sad, or depressed because of how they feel. Thus, if you don't do
well at this point, you'll be depressed.
