Amy Tan’s Mother tongue
Amy Tan, in her book ‘Mother Tongue,’ in her rich style full of different figures of
speech, shares a remarkable journey of seeing the world in a bigger picture and breaking down
stereotypes using literature. She uses the art of humour and satire to explain why a foreign
language must not always be used when the mother tongue can be used to make communication
easy. Based on her relationship with her mother, she explores the connection between Asian and
Western cultures. The main theme of her book is to depict the true power that language poses,
and how it can be used as a tool to convey messages that bridge warring societies in the world.
Unlike other times when language has been abused and used to demean a certain race, or
empower a certain region, or amplify stereotypes towards a certain victim, Amy Tan creates a
bridge between language, peace, information, and positive life experiences.
“…personal opinions on the English language and its variation in this country or
others…the way it can evoke an emotion, a visual image, a complex idea, or a simple truth”
(Tan, 2004, p. 466).
Visual text
In the second part, I choose the Vegetarian ad visual text. The main idea of the ad is an
illustration of how all forms of life have the right to love and therefore should not be exposed to
life-threatening situations such as the meat industry. The picture depicts the life of a human
being with parts of flesh on display and on the other hand, a cow with parts of her flesh labelled.
The climax of the ad is the inclusion of the message that all animals have the same parts. This is
to demonstrate that the life of animals is equally important to that of human beings.
