Marriage entails the unification of two people as companions in a peculiar relationship.
Friendship leads to the rise of a family comprising a group of people made up of partners,
children, and relatives. However, many people have a different perspective on marriage and
family. For instance, many Americans perceive that love is blind and that romance and spring up
anywhere as long as two people have love chemistry. On the contrary, chapter 14 argues
differently that Cupid's arrow is aimed mainly by society. Marriage is affected by social factors
such as background that tend to change our present and future selection of a life partner, and bi-
cultural families tend to have a universal view and practice of love and marriage.
According to chapter 14, several social factors play an essential role in the mate selection
process. Marriage and family are fundamental structures in most communities. However, the
mate selection process is an exciting aspect among sociologists and social scientists. However,
sociologists perceive marriage and families as societal institutions that aid in the formation of
social structure basic units. Just like other institutions, families, and unions adapt to social
changes. Social factors affect the mate selection process where people's perceptions about
marriage and family in the United States are changing. Social factors that affect the mate
selection process include aspects such as race, color, background, status, religious rules, political
ideology, traditions, and customs (Clark, 2019).
People have different social aspects that have played a role in their growth and selection
of life partners. The background aspect tends to affect people perceptive about life, family, and
marriage. Some people are from a wealthy background, middle, or even poor background. Thus,
in selecting a life partner, people tend to view the background aspects, which affect the selection
process. The race is another factor that people consider to entail physical traits such as hair
texture, facial features, and skin color. People tend to be selective in terms of the race, where
