CTT AND IRT FOR MEASUREMENT PRECISION AN ETHICAL ISSUES 2
Classical test theory (CTT) is one the oldest and most prominent psychological theories
that predict outcomes of psychological testing particularly difficulty of the items or the ability of
the test-takers. On the other hand, Item response theory (IRT), sometimes known as latent
response theory is a psychological model that tries to provide explanation between latent traits
which are often unobservable attributes as well as their manifestations. For the purpose of
measurement precision, item response theory (IRT) is more superior to classical test theory
(CTT). According to Kohli et al., 2015, IRT has been the primary framework for educational
measurement and psychometric issues. Based on the authors, IRT is more theoretically superior
to the CTT framework particularly within the context of estimating person and item parameters.
Further, the authors argue that person and item statistics based on CTT framework are test and
sample independent respectively (Kohli et al., 2015).
Research indicates that the item statistics resulting from CTT-based models, item
difficulty, and discrimination are dependent on the sample of the respondent that are selected for
the study. Moreover, if the same items are administered to a different sample and item difficulty
and item discrimination indices computed based on CTT framework, then we are likely to record
substantial variation in results based the same selected (Kohli et al., 2015). In other words, in
CTT, there is standardized measure and as such we are likely to experience variation in results
when the same tests are administered to a new set of sample. On the other hand, the item and
person statistics based on IRT are stable and standardized across different samples of items and
persons. The superiority of IRT is based on the ability variable which is considered to be stable
in IRT because it considers item response function as a regression function of the observed tests
scores (Jabrayilov et al., 2016).
