Healthy eating habits to improve nutrition
Eating habits have a significant impact on the quality of nutrition and in turn health.
Healthy eating habits lead to improved nutrition, healthier body, and stronger immune system.
On the other hand, poor eating habits lead to poor health and increased likelihood of developing
both acute and chronic illnesses. Healthy eating habits refer to eating a balanced diet that
includes fruits, vegetables, meat, and dairy products. Research has shown that most eating habits
are established early on in life during childhood by parents and persist throughout life
(Deshpande et al., 2009). Therefore, it is important to establish and reinforce healthy eating
habits among children. Later on in life as adolescents or adults, eating habits are shaped by a
variety of factors including preferences, costs, convenience, and lifestyle. For example, a student
living away from home is likely to eat cheap junk food that he can afford and eat on the go
instead of cooking at home or eating at an upscale restaurant. Furthermore, eating habits are
influenced by the media, society, and peers.
The first time children get to decide their food and eating habits is when they step out of
their homes during college life. Unfortunately, research has shown that college students have
poor eating habits which leads to poor health and nutrition (Deshpande et al., 2009). They eat
fewer fruits and vegetables and mostly rely on high energy junk foods such as fast food and soft
drinks. This in turn leads to weight problems among college students which continue on into
their adult lives. In other words, our eating habits have a direct impact on our health and the
habits established in youth impact our health for the rest of our lives. Therefore, it is very
important to establish healthy eating habits early during childhood so that we can live a healthy
life.
