UNDERSTANDING INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATION 2
QUESTION ONE
Self-concept is about how one views what and how they are based on their skills, habits,
and temperament. In essence, this is the individual's ability to reflect on their traits, skills, and
habits. On the other hand, self-esteem is the extent to which one values themselves (Bevan,
2020). This involves how one accepts, approves, and values themselves. Self-esteem and self-
concept are connected to intrapersonal and interpersonal communication. The manner in which
we communicate with others and with ourselves plays a key role in influencing self-esteem and
self-concept. It is through interpersonal communication that one gets to know more about their
self-concept. Conversely, intrapersonal communication determines how one values themself
(Gamble & Gamble, 2013).
Based on the Johari window results, the five words I used to describe myself are; loving,
helpful, giving, friendly, and extroverted. On the other hand, the five descriptors given by friends
and family members are; accepting, brave, caring, cheerful, and shy. The labels in the two
windows appear to be largely similar. For instance, one similarity is that on one label, it says I
am giving, and the other side labeled me as caring. Another similarity is about being friendly,
where the other window described me as accepting and cheerful, which are similar attributes as
being friendly. In terms of differences, the blind spot label says I am shy, which is different
from what I described in the other window, which says I am confident.
Connecting the Johari window results and Bevan's idea on self-concept and self-esteem,
it is clear that how we relate and communicate with others define what we are. Johari's windows
tell a lot about self-concept. On the other, it can go a long way to destroy one's self-esteem after
seeing the descriptors that friends and family members label them with. Intrapersonal and
