CAPSTONE
I believe the future of the juvenile justice system lies in rehabilitation, treatment,
and community based programs. We are in a war to save our children from drug
cartels, gangs, and other criminal minds. We must utilize all of our resources as
Law-enforcement has shown it cannot stop the flow of drugs into this country, or
completely control gang activity and other criminal behaviors. There has to be
other strategies utilized and juveniles must be provided the opportunity and
resources to change their lives. Changing juvenile criminal behavior should be the
goal of the juvenile criminal justice system.
The juvenile justice system is very essential in our system of justice and
government. Adolescents who perform delinquent acts and criminal behaviors
must receive consequences for their actions. The question is will these
consequences teach the juveniles to understand that punishment can be equal to
whatever crime they commit, but that they have an opportunity to redeem
themselves. Community based programs are a means of diverting criminal
punishment and incarceration to rebuild the ties between the delinquent juvenile
and the communities they will return to. These programs are also designed to
rehabilitate the offender into an active, productive and non-threat member of the
community.
I believe there should be an overall comprehensive juvenile justice strategy. This
strategy would include courts, law-enforcement efforts, corrections, rehabilitation
programs, treatment and community base programs, and possible legalization of
drugs. The juvenile justice system must be redesigned to deter adolescents from
committing additional crimes, and prevent juveniles from becoming career
criminals.
There must be a combined effort utilizing resources from all of the afore-
mentioned agencies and groups. Specific problems relating to the cause of juvenile
delinquency must be identified and solved using all the afore-mentioned strategies.
We as a country must do all we can to save our greatest asset, our children .These
juveniles are the future of the next generation I do believe sometimes that some
juveniles are so violent that they need to be taken away from the public. Regardless
of the crime, the public still has a moral responsibility to try and restore these
young offenders.
