Annotation Worksheet
Source: “Privilege” Mireya S. Vela. Cultural Weekly. June 19, 2020
I. Rhetorical Context (Who wrote it or created it? Why was it written? What is
it trying to do to or for its readers? What is it? Where does it appear? When
was it published? What is its genre?)
The author, Mireya S. Vela, is a writer who focuses on addressing issues Mexican-
Americans face. This essay, “Privilege,” was published in June 2020 (approximately a
month after the death of George Floyd) while race issues were at the forefront of public
conversation. This essay provides context and perspective to illuminate casual privilege
and insensitivity. A creative nonfiction piece, Vela uses her personal experience to
inform discussion of a social issue.
II. Summary (What does the text say? What are its main points? What did you
find most interesting or important?)
The text illustrates a pattern of incidents in which Vela’s blonde liberal neighbor
routinely disregards Vela’s boundaries and feels personally attacked when Vela pushes
back against her invasive behavior. Throughout the essay Vela describes situations in
which her neighbors’ privilege and ignorance lead them to, often unknowingly or
uncaringly, degrade Vela’s values in favor of their desires.
The most important aspect of the text is the moments in which Vela colors incidents with
personal context (such as why she feels a deep attachment to her possessions) while the
neighbors act with a sickening disregard for Vela’s clear discomfort. Also important to
these moments is Vela’s feeling so deeply violated by her neighbors’ behavior but feeling
powerless to stop them.
In describing these incidents, Vela illustrates what everyday racist entitlement looks like
while illustrating the hurt and deep discomfort they cause.
III. What are THREE golden lines from the text? (Quotes that stood out the most.)
Quote 1:
“But it’s always like this. He always comes into my house and takes control. He hunts
around for toys he never asks to borrow. He looks through the drawers for candy. When
he finds something he likes, he asks to take it home. To our young neighbor this is all
amusing. To me, it’s like someone is trying to take away all the things I have worked
hard for.
Evaluation/Significance of the Quote (Why did you choose it?):
This section is a perfect example privilege that wears her down. It shows the neighbor’s
family pushing their rules into Vela’s home, with no care or sense that the context of
Vela’s home is different from their own.
