THE HUNGRY WOMAN By Cherríe Moraga Plot The play takes place in a postapocalyptic world in the southwest boarder of the United States. Aztlán is a separate country carved out for Latinos and Hispanics as well as for some Native Americans. The main character, Medea, was exiled because of the traditional, conservative, anti-homosexual revolution in Aztlán. Medea, her long-time lover, and her teenage son Chac-Mool, and her girlfriend live in the border of the US and what would be present day around Phoenix, Arizona. The main conflict centers around Medea's husband Jasón wanting to divorce Medea and take her son with him back to Aztlán. Characters The titular character. She is a proud bisexual and former revolutionary. Medea Medea’s son. He is a teenager. Rebellious but has a good heart. Jason Medea’s husband. Has an important position in Azlan. Chac-Mool Luna Medea’s long-time girlfriend. “Voice of reason” Setting • The play takes place in Southwest of United States near the border. • It also take place in Aztlan. TONE AND STYLE The play is written in a lyrical style. It has an urgent, melodic tone. The play is charged and can be intense at times. Play has moments of tenderness especially between Medea, her son and her lover.
