Question 1: Why do female and male geladas have red patches on their chests, instead of on
their rear-ends?
It is important to note that swellings on female Geladas’ rear-ends is a sign of their
reproductive ability. This would not be a convenient way for females to signal potential mates
since geladas would sit on their rumps most of the time. Red patches on their chests thus
provides the swelling signs instead. The color and the size of the patch in the female is an
indication of the stage she is in her reproductive cycle whereas in male, the patch indicates his
status.
Question 2: How are researchers trying to discover what females are choosing in male
geladas? What are they measuring?
Courtship triggers evolution by controlling whose genes are passed on to the next
generation, thus intense competition leads to a wide range of displays and impressive
ornamentation. Scientists around the globe are really making impressive discoveries on the
complex nature of competition in courtship in the animal kingdom. Females are mostly the ones
who make most decisions during mating in the animal world (Brown& brown, 2020). Gelada
females evaluate the males through range of their abilities, from babysitting skills to body heat
and once they make their decision, any other male would have to be auditioned in order to be
considered. Female geladas also choose their males by the intensity of their chest color.
Question 3: Male sage grouse display on a lek and display in order to attract females. How
are biologists studying male sage grouse vocal displays? What did they discover?
Scientists detected the double whistle vocal whistle using multi-channel audio recordings
together with video recordings of male sage grouse behavior. They examined recordings from a
certain population throughout the species' range and found evidence of double whistle in all six
