Entire course DQ’s For GEN 105
Week 2 DQ 1
Tone is very important when communicating online. How will your tone, or writing style,
change based on the different types of people you will be communicating with online?
Consider family, friends, classmates, and instructors in your response.
My style and tone change drastically to the different audiences I’m trying to reach. For instance,
when I’m writing to a friend I tend to joke around with them and bring up events only they or I
will know about. Here’s an example of a past online conversation with an old friend:
Myself: So are you getting to old to remember that party at Julia’s house right after you got your
drivers license.
Friend (no names needed): No! Do you remember how we got away when the cops busted it?
Myself: Sure, you almost broke your melon (head) on the fence when you plowed through it
‘cause you wouldn’t let your beer go.LOL
On the other hand, when communicating with most family members my tone is usually that of
a concerned person. For instance when I e-mail my sister I always start off by asking her how she
is doing and also how my two nieces are doing as well. Always I end the e-mail letting her know
that she can ask me if she needs anything.
The only time that I use a professional tone is here in class or at work. I think it shows respect
for the instructor, class mates, co-workers and my managers. Using any other tone in these
situations, in my personal opinion, is very unprofessional.
Week 2 DQ 2
How is conducting research online different from conducting research in a traditional
library? Based on suggestions presented by the University Library Tutorial and text
recommendations concerning Web research strategies, what will be your personal approach to
conducting academic Web searches?
So far I can say that conducting research on the internet beats out the old fashion way by a mile.
Traditionally you would have to take a lot of time out of your day, drive untold miles, look for a
parking spot and then apply for a library card before you could even begin to look for the
information you wanted. Once there and ready to go, you would have to look through index
cards (or now a computer based index), find the title or author of the publication needed for your
assignment and begin reading untold pages before you found what it was you were looking for.
Now it seems that technology has taken a turn for the better by letting us look for our resources
in an online library. Personally I don’t think it could get much easier than this!
From what I seen from the tutorial I think the easiest way to find information I’ll need is to
just straight up ask a Librarian. It’s direct and straight to the point with the most qualified person
in the Library helping you. The easy to use instructions are self explanatory and the results seem
to be just what we need. Now after I have some experience with finding information on my own
then I’ll just look up the sites I need and complete my assignments. Weather it needs to be a

certain or specific document or publication or a theses for something, the proper links are posted
on the main screen so you don’t get lost.
In conclusion I feel that conducting online research will be very productive for everyone with
little to no effort compared to the traditional research in a regular library.
Week 4 DQ 1
Axia College takes academic honesty seriously. Think for a moment about an author whose
original work has been plagiarized by a student. Why would that author consider plagiarism to
be such a grave offense?
In my opinion the author whose paper had just been plagiarized would be greatly offended by the
act because in doing this the author is being violated just the same as if someone had broke into
his home and stole his property. The author might even have been getting paid to write this
article or just wanted it to be published for acknowledgment of his lifelong work. So for this, I
think he would have wanted some kind of redemption. It probably was something that the author
had worked so hard on and probably took a long time to create, and for someone to just copy
and paste it to satisfy their laziness in completing an assignment without giving credit to the
person who actually wrote the article, is just wrong.
In the penal system, theft is dealt with by incarceration or probation to the person who
committed the crime. Plagiarism, in my opinion is about the same thing, just dealing with written
items, and should be dealt with by the strictest of punishments allowed.
Week 4 DQ 2
What are other ways in which you can make use of the wealth of Web-based information and
still guard against plagiarism?
There is an uncountable amount of data bases out there in the internet where someone can get
information from; all you have to do is look. There are sites where you can read e-books, log
onto a local news papers, or even local news stations where information is always downloadable.
If that is not enough for someone, they could subscribe to or buy programs to download
publications that are hard to find. Then of course, there is always the university library where we
can do our research. However, anytime you use the information of another you need to quote the
section used. Noting the name of the author and where you got the information from. If needed,
you can also add the web link where you copied the information. Always make sure that when
using others information to give credit to the publishing author in order to avoid plagiarism.
Week 6 DQ 1
How do you spend most of your time? Do you think that your time is managed effectively?
Explain your reasons.
In my opinion all my time is managed according to my family’s needs or wants, so I
guess you could say that I am in need of some serious time management training. I do
find the time to take care of things I need to though.
Most of my time is spent working at ConAgra Foods. I start my work week off at 7pm
Monday evening and do not finish the week until the following Monday at 7am, this
makes for a whopping 60 hour week. After each day when I get home I’ll try and help
