Questions
1. As “Parent 2,” how many recessive traits did you express? What were they?
I expressed seven recessive traits which were: chin, bent little finger, green eyes, free ear,
widows peak, interlocking fingers and mid-digital hair.
2. As “Parent 2,” how many dominant traits did you express? What were they?
I expressed three dominant traits which were Rolled tongue, PTC strips and Hitchhiker’s thumb
3. While the traits studied in Exercise 1 were hypothetical genetic traits, what type
of genetic traits do you think are important to study and predict? Give an
example of a genetic trait that is carefully monitored when two parents are
creating an offspring and why it would be important to monitor.
It is important to monitor and predict genetic disorders relating to health especially when one is
concerned about the offspring. Some genetic diseases may affect the offspring’s health and should
be screened. An example of a genetic trait to be monitored is sickle cell anemia, Huntington’s
disease and Down’s syndrome. Diseases such as sickle cell anaemia which is an autosomal
recessive can easily pass on the traits to an offspring. Usually getting to know the family history
of a partner is important and following this up with testing for the hemoglobin SS trait.
Huntington’s disease is an autosomal dominant disorder, therefore, it would be important to screen
your partner, because incase either parents has the trait, the offspring has a half a chance of
acquiring the disease. The information can be useful to make decisions such as foregoing children,
using of donor gametes or adopting children.
