UNTIL LIONS HAVE THEIR OWN HISTORIANS, THE HUNTER WILL ALWAYS BE
GLORIFIED” AN ETHIOPIAN PROVERB 2
The selected saying is “Until lions have their own historians, the hunter will always be
glorified” an Ethiopian proverb. This proverb means that this always the second side of a coin,
one which mostly remains unrevealed due to unwillingness to consider the probable merits of
alternative viewpoints. It simply means that bias is almost always present in historical writing. I
agree with this saying because bias has been part of the investigation and writing of history since
the discipline’s early beginnings. This issue is addressed through modern academic discipline
that is founded on empirical approaches: primary sources are studied so as to reconstruct the past
on the basis of available evidence. The absence of empirical methods means that history will
always be one-sided and since the story of the hunt was told by someone interested only in the
affairs of the hunter, the lion’s side of the story will remain untold. According to Trevelyan
(1947), human knowledge is limited and every person has their own limited vision. As such,
everyone has a duty to widen their vision, to bring it closest to the large truth of things
(Trevelyan, 1947). Studying all facts with the reach of a historian brings the historian closer to
their endeavor.
