LEARNING FROM LEADERSHIP
Introduction
The leadership industry witnessed an explosion in the last 40 years, and it shifted from an
American phenomenon to a global enterprise. Its origin was anchored on the American attitude
of I can do it, implying that every challenge has a solution, and humanity has the potential in
everything, including learning (Gamble & Gamble, 2020). Leadership is highly esteemed based
on its nexus to power, influence, and wealth; hence, it is regarded as a path to individual and
professional fulfillment. In resonance with Northouse (2018), leadership is a trait, ability, and
skill. Contemporary society has focused on leadership as a skill; thus, higher learning institutions
emphasize leadership development through training. Despite the substantial financial investment
in corporate leadership training, the programs have not yielded; therefore, this reflection affirms
my agreement with Barbara Kellerman’s thesis on the end of leadership and the leadership
industry's failures to deliver on its promises.
Summary
Leadership training and development has attained exponential consideration in the last 40
years; thus, making it a global concern. Recent materials on leadership consider it fundamental
skills that everyone should possess in this century. It is believed that everything rises and falls
with the leadership; hence, leaders are always at the forefront in guiding how activities are
carried out within organizations (Gamble & Gamble, 2020). However, in the twenty-first
century, the notion has changed, and it is believed that leadership has minimal privileges than
before. Previously, leadership was valued because those in positions of power and authority had
influence and controlled wealth distribution. Thus, institutions of higher learning globally have
centered their training on leadership development. The leadership programs are aimed at
enlightening youths to be responsible leaders, ethically, and morally. Leadership concept is used
in programs, especially designed for the youths to entice them into such programs by making
them appear respectable and desirable. Some programs such as LEAP are intended for high
school students preparing them to transition into the college life. Leadership has been
incorporated into it as part of the package, although its programs are not anchored on leadership.
Universities also offer multiple programs for students such as sports, student governance, and
campus clubs to sharpen their leadership skills. Leadership programs are specific to areas of
concern such as wildlife conservancy, environmental protection leadership, and natural resource
leadership. Some countries like China have designed leadership training and development to suit
communist ideals.
Analysis
Lack of elaborate scholarly framework
Leadership is integral in all areas since leaders make vital decisions and help
organizations achieve their set objectives. The study of leadership originated from Plato and
Confucius, who designed programs to align how leaders should govern their subjects. Many
publications have been availed in the public domain in the recent past, although many have not
