Roma Film Analysis
Roma film is a black and white Mexican film written and produced by Alfonso Cuaron,
based on a true story. There is an indigenous maid that works in a family of seven. Cleo, the
maid, is loved and welcomed as part of the family though she is reminded of her role. Everything
in the movie is seen through Cleo's eyes as it examines the class division between the different
races in México, from the well of white people to the working class, mainly the black people
(Castillo, 2018). Generally, the film is about a housekeeper living in a middle-class family, and it
takes note of how one can be disregarded in the midst of a different social environment.
One of the most memorable parts of the film is how the producer has used a flawless
design which enables the audience to catch every happening in the scenes. It is interesting how
the producer has captured a perception of social and category inequity. For example, in one
scene, the family is watching television. Cleo joins them on a cushion on the floor. It is apparent
that she is not treated as equal.
A thought that has stuck with me that I like to discuss is that this movie highlights class
and racial dynamics and it exposes how an individual can exposed to many occurrences in their
typical life. For example, many happenings become engrossed in Cleo’s life, like the unplanned
pregnancy and the different crisis in the family. Watching this film has modified how I view
cultural borders. It is evident that two separate societies with two distinct cultures are together;
there will always be unequal treatment. The film describes a woman's life, who is not only comes
from a lower social class and an indigenous heritage, but she is in a society ridden by class.
