Article Critique: “Do You Have to “Love” Every Student? And What If You Don’t?”
Teacher-student relationships matter, but the point of contention is on whether teachers
have to love all their students. The misconception about teaching and those getting into teaching
is further expounded by pop culture such as film and TV that depict everything about teaching as
magical. The teacher falls in love with all the diverse personalities. In the article "Do you have to
'Love' Every Student? And What If You Don't?" Madeline Will (2020) provides insight into the
teaching reality and the difficulty of loving all children as much as the author provides important
information on the mechanism to foster love in the student-teacher relationship. There is a
limitation concerning the scope of practice and whether such action might supersede teachers'
professional role as educators. Besides, the applicability of the expert's advice is neither
evidence-based nor supported by research.
