There are four different ways psychologists use to assess personality. First, there is the
personal interview; the purpose of an interview is to gain information from the interviewee. An
unstructured interview is exactly what it is named after, unstructured. The questions are not
predetermined; questions are spontaneous and arise during the course of conversation, with some
questions followed by additional questions on the topic. A structured interview has
predetermined questions in a specific order, which is not deviated from. Personal interviews are
used in determining psychodynamic, humanistic, and social learning theories of personality.
Second, there is direct observation. Direct observation can become time-consuming and
expensive to achieve results that could be misinterpreted. Most people have a tendency to act
differently if they know they are being watched or observed, which could alter the observers
interpretation of the observation. Direct observation is used in determining social learning
personality traits.
Third, there are the objective tests. Common standardized tests include the Sixteen
Personality Factor Questionaire (16-PF), NEO-PI-R, and the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality
Inventory (MMPI-2). The 16-PF is a 374-question objective personality test based on 16 traits.
This test has been beneficial during studies of people with cancer, heart disease, alcoholism and
war-related stress (Maisto & Morris). The NEO-PI-R is a 240-question objective personality test
used to assess five basic dimensions of extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness,
emotional stability, and culture (the Big Five). The MMPI-2 is a 704 question objective
personality test was developed to aid in the diagnosis of psychiatric disorders (Maisto & Morris).
Objective tests are generally used for evaluating personalities; however, the results depend on
how truthful or objective the test-taker is. The purpose of the objective test is to be objective of
oneself. Objective testing is used in determining humanistic, trait, and social learning theories of
personality. The test located at http://similarminds.com/jung_word.html is an objective test. I
took the test several times with almost identical results. The test results are fairly accurate to my
own personal beliefs of myself. This site also had an additional personality test, Personality 100,
that I also took. These results also depicted my own personal opinion and beliefs of myself. I
tend to believe that objective testing is fairly accurate when one understands and knows himself
or herself.
