1.The Type of Teams at Whole Foods
The most suitable label that demonstrates the type of team employed by Whole Foods in its
operation is a self-managed team. In particular, the company is an upscale retailer with a focus
on leveraging the benefits of teamwork to enhance its competitive advantage and increase
productivity. A self-directed team focuses on combining the aspects of collaboration and
competition to achieve the desired level of performance. It is evident that teams at Whole Foods
meet often to address issues facing the company as well as make organizational strategic
decisions including hiring process matters (Colquitt, LePine, & Wesson, 2019). At Whole Foods,
candidates do not undergo the conventional hiring process employed by most firms but instead
are interviewed by both the hiring manager as well as a select team. Specifically, applicants that
pass the initial interview are subjected to a 30- day evaluation by a particular team whereby
voting is done to ascertain if the candidate is successful. The select team constitutes members
chosen from various teams in the organization affirming that the company employs a self-
directed team with an interlocking structure that begins from the lowest up to the highest level of
the organization (Burkus, 2016).
The types of teams evident at Whole Foods emphasizes the aspects of collaboration and
competition in their routine operations. Cooperation is demonstrated in the fact that almost all
employees in the organization have the power and influence on the hiring process. The store
leaders are responsible for screening candidates and recommend them for a particular job. The
team members assess the applicant and vote to ascertain the most suitable candidate for the job
position. Therefore, the teams are central to effective operations in the organization due to their
