Social Injustice and Cultural Identifiers
Identity is a sense of belonging. Cultural identifiers refer to an individual's identity or a
group of people from the same group or family. Examples of cultural identifiers are age, ethnicity,
religion, race, or gender. Cultural identifiers are important because they enable people to have a
sense of belonging to a certain group (Mayworm et al., 2016). It also helps to promote unity among
people of the same group. Besides, understanding cultural identifiers enables people to understand
and appreciate their differences, thus reducing conflicts. Also, people feel secure when they belong
to a common group. The cultural identifier also promotes social networking because it determines
how people socialize among themselves. Therefore, they are significant for the growth,
development, and wellbeing of individuals. This paper will discuss ethnicity as a cultural identifier.
Cultural Identifier Description
Ethnicity refers to the classification of people according to their cultural beliefs. People
who have a common origin, language, and cultural values are classified in the same ethnic group.
In the United States (US), ethnic groups include African Americans, Latin Americans, White
Americans, and Asian Americans. White Americans are the most dominant group in the US
because they live in their native land. Ethnicity is a cultural identifier that affects the education
system in the US. Ethnicity has contributed to educational attainment among K-12 students
(Salerno & Reynolds, 2017). There are issues of segregation in schools according to ethnic groups.
Some schools do not enroll students from a certain ethnic group. Therefore, there is a need for the
government to promote social justice in schools to ensure there are equal educational opportunities
in the nation. K-12 education ensures that there are justice and equality among all students in
schools. Equality promotes diversification in schools and enables students to develop a sense of
fairness and equality that they apply in their daily lives.
