1. Introduction
The controversy surrounding the reality of ADHD as a chronic disorder
ADHD as a chronic condition that affects both children and adults
ADHD as causing above normal levels of hyperactive and impulsive behaviors
ADHD is a chronic condition where the patient may have issues with attention and activity. The
patient will have difficulty in maintaining attention and concentration for a period of time. The
patient may also be over or hyper reactive. There have been several controversies regarding the
actual existence of ADHD as a disorder. Some people indicate that it is a way parents dodge the
responsibility of their children having uncontrollable behaviors. However, the studies that have
been conducted on the theories attempting to explain it indicate that this is an actual disorder
emanating from different quarters. ADHD can begin in childhood and continue into adulthood.

ADHD as being explained through four diverse theories- genetics, social-environmental
factors, psychosocial theories and psychoanalytic theories
Research findings towards attention disorders running in families
There is the probability of having 25 percent of the close relatives for an ADHD patient
having the disorder.
ADHD has been explained by four diverse theories which include genetics, environmental factors,
psychosocial theories and psychoanalytic theories. On the genetic theory as the causative factor
for ADHD, research has showed that a patient with ADHD is likely to come from a family where
25 percent of the members are suffering from the same disorder. Studies that have been conducted
on twins indicate that there are strong genetic influence in the disorder. The studies have further
