Environmental Impact of Electric Cars
Global warming is a major topic today, and the earth needs to keep the environment
healthy and sustainable. Electric vehicles have been identified as a key technology for emission
reduction in the environment. Electric cars are appealing to areas where carbon emission
reduction is a growing concern. Electric vehicles are considered environment friendly. Electric
cars emit lesser greenhouse gases and other air pollutants compared to diesel and petrol cars. The
consideration of their impact on the environment is based on the vehicle's production and the
electricity required for fueling the vehicles. While there is an increasing interest in electric cars,
there is a need to consider their environmental impact. The focus of this paper is to assess the
environmental impact of electric cars.
Electric vehicles have a great contribution to the improvement of air quality. Electric cars
produce no carbon emissions when driving. The carbon emission reduction lessens air pollution,
considerably rendering the streets clean. An electric car saves an average of about one and a half
million grams of carbon dioxide (Greenhouse Gas Emissions from a Typical Passenger Vehicle).
Electric cars help in noise pollution as cars are quieter compared to conventional vehicles.

Electric cars are proven to be environment friendly compared to diesel and petrol cars.
Gasoline-powered cars emit about 4.6 tons of carbon (IV ) oxide per year. Gas-powered cars
make up to 28.9% emissions of greenhouse gases (Sources of Greenhouse Gas Emissions).
Electric cars are not involved in direct emissions as gas cars do, but the emissions arise from the
mixture of sources that contribute to the local grid. Based on the blending of various power
sources in various areas. Areas utilizing electric vehicles result in less than an equivalent of fifty
miles per gallon of the gases. They are thus showing that the emissions from electric cars are
minimal.
Uncertainties exist around the emissions that are associated with the production of the
electric car’s battery. The production of electric cars does not utilize a lot of energy, and the
emissions created during the production tends to be higher than that of an electric car. The
emissions are due to lithium-ion batteries' manufacture, which are an essential part of electric
cars (Schmid, 4). A variety of rare earth metals make up the composition of the battery, and their
mining and handling contribute to carbon emissions. Approximately fifty percent of the battery
lifecycle emissions originate from electricity utilized in the production and assembly of batteries
used in electric vehicles (Hausfather). Approximately more than a third emissions from an
electric car comes from the energy used in electric cars' production. The pollution created by
electric car batteries' production remains higher than that of petrol or diesel-based engines.
