PROPERTIES OF X-RAYS 2
Properties of X-Rays and their Applications
X-Rays - Properties, Definition, Wavelength, Types, Uses, Invention (2020) defines X-
Rays as a form of electromagnetic radiations, formed when electrons strike with the metal plates.
X-rays were discovered by a German physician named Wilhelm Roentgen in the year 1895.
Since its discovery, X-rays are applied widely in different fields: medicine, security, astronomy,
industry, and restoration ("X-Rays - Properties, Definition, Wavelength, Types, Uses,
Invention”, 2020). The paper presents the characteristics of X-rays and their uses in the field of
radiology, the art of imaging.
X-rays depict the following properties: one, according to the X-Ray Properties - El
Camino College (2020), all X-rays are electrically neutral, which implies that the rays are not
affected by both electric or magnetic fields. The property enables the rays to pass through
charged magnetic and electric fields unaffected. The property of X-rays being neutral, is applied
in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, where the patient lies in a magnetic tube (Lindon,
1995). Secondly, X-rays travel in a straight line, just like light rays ("X-Ray Properties - El
Camino College”, 2020). The property enables the rays to produce black images on the screen
when they hit high-density objects like bones in the human body. The property is applied by
using the concept of shadows created on the screen when light rays hit an opaque object.
Thirdly, according to Sah (2020), X-rays have a high penetrating power, which enables
them to pass through many solid objects and human skin. They, however, cannot penetrate high-
density metals and bones in the human body. The property is applied in radiology when taking
images of the human bones, deep inside the human body. The rays penetrate the human skin and
fat and are only blocked by heavy bones, which are then printed on the screen as shadows,
enabling doctors to analyze the fractures in the bones. The fourth property is that when X-rays
