Introduction
The term “Narcotics” comes from as far back as ancient Sumer and Egypt. The opium poppy
has been utilized since at least 4000B.C.E. to treat coughs, pain, and insomnia. Of course, this
was all before the opium poppy’s addictive properties were discovered. Throughout the
19
th
century, that little secret spread so laws were set to regulate its use. Narcotic actually comes
from the Greek word “narcosis” which means making one numb, or process of numbing. Of
course today Narcotic means “substances” that bind opioids to the receptors of the rain.
Narcotics are one of the oldest and strongest depressant analgesic drugs known to man. It
affects the central nervous system, reduces pain, induces sleep and stimulates euphoria.
Narcotics are limited in possession and intended for the purposes of scientific and medical use
for patients with various injuries or chronic pain. It is obvious that it should be discouraged that
this drug be intended for trafficking for the purpose of illegal intention for sale and abuse. This
is an enormous problem and needs to be brought under control (Denning, 2011).
Narcotics can be classified into three groups according to their origins. The natural derivatives
of the opium poppy such as morphine and codeine. Morphine is used after surgery or surgical
procedures for pain and is usually done intravenously. Next are partially synthetic drugs which
are derived from morphine which includes heroin and oxycodone (Saferstein, 2011). We know
there is no good that comes from heroin, and oxycodone is prescribed for pain, but has been
coined as the “poor man’s heroin”. Last are the synthetic compounds that resemble morphine in
the chemical aspect and include fentanyl, methadone, and propoxyphene. Fentanyl buccal is
used for cancer pain along with other non-fentanyl narcotic medications to help cancer patients.
