(MP’s Parliament Essay)
The Members of Parliament (MPs) are officials that are elected by the UK public to
represent their interests into the House of Commons. The role of MPs is to serve as a lawmaker of
the country and represent their constituents including proposal of new laws and raising of issues
that matter to its constituents in the House. An MP is an occupation that requires meticulous
attention to the work of the state, their constituency, and remaining steadily employed. However,
instances occur where the decisions of MPs do not act in the best areas of their constituents. To
demonstrate this, we first analyze the work of an MP through describing the type of roles they play.
As noted in class, an MP has three general roles: (1) the constituency role; (2) the party role; and (3)
the scrutiny role. When the first two roles conflict with one another, the MP is placed at a
crossroads. They can either follow the interests of their constituents or adhere to the party line.
Next, examining the relation to these roles and relevant MP’s the general understanding is that the
devotion to one role over another is done purposely. When conflicts occur between these roles and
how the MP votes in the House of Commons, schisms between constituents and party leaders can
circumvent the good intentions an MP had when entering office. Nonetheless, I agree with the
statement that UK MPs do not act in their constituents' best interests, but not for the reasons one
may expect.
